Why do I need to check with my cable provider before purchasing a modem?
All cable providers have their own network settings that only allow certain models of modems onto their network. The best thing to ask your cable service provider is: 1. Do you have a modem compatibility list? If they do purchase a model from that list and then call your cable provider after you purchase it to register the cable modem onto their network by providing the MAC address on the unit. 2. Ask what DOCSIS standard they support. If they do not provide a compatibility list then you need to make sure you have the correct DOCSIS standard for the modem you are purchasing. Many modems are backwards compatible as well so a DOCSIS 3.0 modem will usually also support DOCSIS 2.0 and DOCSIS 1.1 networks, but keep in mind you will not receive the DOCSIS 3.0 speed if your cable provider only runs a DOCSIS 1.0 or DOCSIS 2.0 network.
